Residence Permits Through Company Formation in Turkey

Last updated: April 17, 2026

Overview

Foreign investors who form a company in Turkey have several pathways to legal residency. While company ownership alone does not automatically grant a residence permit, it provides a strong basis for several permit categories.

This guide covers the main residence permit options available to foreign business owners in Turkey, including the application process, required documents, costs, and renewal procedures.

Residence Permit Types for Business Owners

1. Short-Term Residence Permit (Kısa Dönem İkamet İzni)

The most common option for foreign company owners. Issued under Article 31 of the Law on Foreigners and International Protection, specifically for those who will establish a business or commercial connection in Turkey.

  • Duration: Up to 2 years per issuance
  • Renewable: Yes, can be renewed indefinitely
  • Work authorization: No — a separate work permit is needed to work
  • Best for: Investors who manage the company remotely and visit periodically

2. Work Permit (Çalışma İzni)

If you plan to actively work in and manage your Turkish company, the work permit is the better option. Since 2014, work permits also function as residence permits — you do not need a separate application.

  • Duration: 1 year initially, then 2–3 years on renewals
  • Includes residence authorization: Yes
  • Best for: Hands-on business owners who reside and work in Turkey

See our Work Permits guide for a detailed breakdown.

3. Turquoise Card (Turkuaz Kart)

Turkey’s premium program for high-value investors and professionals. Provides indefinite work and residence rights.

  • Duration: Indefinite (transitional period of 3 years)
  • Work authorization: Included
  • Best for: Large-scale investors ($500,000+ investment or 50+ employees)

4. Long-Term Residence Permit (Uzun Dönem İkamet İzni)

After 8 uninterrupted years of legal residence in Turkey, foreign nationals may apply for a long-term (indefinite) residence permit.

  • Duration: Indefinite
  • Requirements: 8 years continuous legal residence, no social assistance dependency, sufficient income, health insurance
  • Best for: Investors who have lived and operated in Turkey for many years

Short-Term Residence Permit: Application Process

This is the most relevant permit for new foreign company owners. Here is the step-by-step process:

Step 1: Form your company

Complete the company formation process (trade registry, tax office, SGK). You need a registered company before applying.

Step 2: Obtain a tax number

If you do not already have a Turkish tax ID from the formation process, obtain one at the local tax office.

Step 3: Book an appointment

Schedule a residence permit appointment through the e-İkamet system (e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr). Select the appropriate immigration office (İl Göç İdaresi) based on your registered company address.

Step 4: Prepare documents

Gather all required documents (see list below). Ensure all foreign documents are translated and apostilled.

Step 5: Attend the appointment

Visit the Provincial Directorate of Migration Management (İl Göç İdaresi Müdürlüğü) at the scheduled time with all documents.

Step 6: Provide biometric data

Fingerprints and photos are taken at the appointment.

Step 7: Receive the permit

After processing (typically 2–8 weeks), the residence permit card is mailed to your Turkish address.

Address Registration

After receiving your residence permit, you must register your address with the local population directorate (Nüfus Müdürlüğü). This step is mandatory and must be completed within 20 business days of receiving the permit card.

Required for address registration:

  • Residence permit card
  • Rental contract (notarized) or title deed
  • Passport
  • Two passport-size photos

Renewal Process

Residence permits must be renewed before they expire. Key rules:

  • Apply at least 60 days before the current permit expires
  • Renewal applications are submitted through the e-İkamet system
  • The same documents are required, plus:
    • Current permit card
    • Proof of continued company activity (tax returns, SGK payments)
    • Updated financial means documentation
  • First renewal may be issued for up to 2 years
  • Subsequent renewals follow the same pattern until eligibility for long-term permit

Warning: If your permit expires without renewal, you may face fines and a period where you cannot apply for a new permit. Do not let your permit lapse.

Rights and Limitations

What a residence permit allows:

  • Legal stay in Turkey for the duration of the permit
  • Opening personal bank accounts
  • Signing rental agreements
  • Applying for a Turkish driver’s license
  • Registering for healthcare services
  • Enrolling children in schools

What a residence permit does NOT allow:

  • Working in Turkey (requires a separate work permit)
  • Voting or running for political office
  • Entering certain restricted professions reserved for Turkish citizens

Path to Citizenship

Foreign investors may be eligible for Turkish citizenship through several routes:

Standard naturalization

After 5 consecutive years of legal residence in Turkey, with continuous presence (not absent for more than 12 months total), you may apply for citizenship through naturalization.

Investment-based citizenship

Turkey offers an expedited citizenship program for significant investments:

  • $400,000+ real estate purchase (held for 3 years)
  • $500,000+ bank deposit (held for 3 years)
  • $500,000+ fixed capital investment in a Turkish company
  • Creating 50+ employment positions

These investment routes can lead to citizenship in as little as 3–6 months without any residence period requirement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I automatically get a residence permit when I form a company?

No. Company formation does not automatically grant residence. You must apply separately through the immigration system. However, having an active company strengthens your application significantly.

Can I apply from outside Turkey?

The initial residence permit application must be made while you are in Turkey on a valid visa or visa-exempt stay. You cannot apply from abroad.

Can my family get residence permits through my company?

Family members (spouse and children under 18) can apply for family residence permits based on your own residence permit. This is a separate application through the e-İkamet system.

How long can I stay outside Turkey?

If you hold a short-term residence permit, prolonged absence may affect renewal eligibility. There is no strict rule, but immigration officers consider the actual presence in Turkey when processing renewals.
